Drops of Goodness

Supporting healthy bodies and homes, one drop at a time

Essential oils are so much more than just their fragrance. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are some of the most powerful substances available to us today.  Essential oils are the life-blood of the plants from which they are derived and are complex substances that can provide multiple therapeutic benefits when used properly.

I only use and recommend Young Living Essential Oils and their products. Take your wellness journey to the next level.  I would love to have you on my YL Team!

An essential oil as defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is a volatile oil that gives a plant its characteristic odor, and often other properties, that are obtained from various parts of the plant by steam distillation, expression, or extraction.

The 3 most common methods of using essential oils are: inhalation (breathing in the aroma and oil particles), topical application (on the skin), or ingestion.

No! There are records dating back to 4500 BC which describe the use of “aromatics” for both medical purposes and religious purposes.  The Bible has references for the use of myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, cassia, frankincense, rosemary, hyssop, and spikenard.  The benefits of essential oils were reintroduced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Absolutely NO!! There are 4 grades or types of essential oils on the market today.

  1. synthetic or nature-identical oils: these are produced in a lab
  2. extended or altered oils: these are used in fragrances
  3. Natural oils or Certified oils: these oils don’t contain any or maybe just a few of the therapeutic compounds which should be found in the oil
  4. Therapeutic-grade oil: these oils contain all of the desired therapeutic compounds available in the oil. They are unadulterated and pure in form.

Young Living was established in 1994 and has been dedicated to getting the highest quality essential oil product into every home.  Young Living is the only company that guarantees the essential oil quality and purity through every step, from seed to seal.

Babies and children have much more delicate and sensitive skin so if oils are applied topically they should be significantly diluted with a carrier oil in a ratio of up to 1:30 (EO:carrier oil). If the scent is strong, (like in peppermint, wintergreen, eucalyptus, hyssop), it may cause respiratory distress to a new baby in rare cases.  Just be cautious.  Make sure you are choosing the right oil for your needs and remember these are concentrated substances.  A little goes a long way.  Sensitivities are not usually seen with use of YL essential oils but if they are it may be related to the dose or that was used and it overloaded the system. For additional information, I recommend the book Gentle Babies by Debra Raybern.

A carrier oil is another plant based oil such as coconut oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil or sweet almond oil that can be mixed with an essential oil to “dilute” it. It does not dampen the effectiveness of the essential oil but it does slow the absorption of essential oil by the body to give a longer release effect rather than a quicker dose.  It is also helpful when applying to large surface areas such as the back or abdomen and in areas that may be sensitive such as the back of the neck or upper arm.

Essential oils can often be dropped into an empty vegetable capsule with or without a carrier oil and taken like a traditional pill. Other oils are great in your water (I recommend Young Living’s Lemon Vitality, Grapefruit Vitality or Peppermint Vitality) for a splash of flavor and wellness support. And many of the oils in the Young Living Vitality Line are great for cooking and baking as the concentrated nature of the essential oil lends a great flavor to foods, baked goods, salad dressings and sauces.

Pure oils that do not have a carrier oil in them do not spoil or expire.  If you have made a blend of oils using a carrier oil or added oils to a lotion or other product, then it would be subject to the shelf life of that product.
